St. Anthony Shrine is a Roman Catholic shrine
dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. It contains a first-class relic
of St. Anthony. It is located in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The chapel, which was consecrated in 1889,
originally featured an elaborate interior, with eight side altars
and two large paintings over the high altar depicting scenes from
the life of St. Anthony. The chapel was redecorated in 1978 in a
more simple style, at which time the paintings were covered.
Reliquary
At the back of the chapel, the shrine features
a first-class relic of St. Anthony. The relic is visible at the
base of the St. Anthony statue (large photo, right), and in a close-up
(Far right, circular photo). First-class relics are parts of the
body or bones of a saint, while second-class relics are objects
that were used by or associated with a saint (or somehow with the
Lord). A third-class relic is a piece of cloth or something that
has been touched to a first- or second-class relic.
