Movie celebrates meeting of St. Francis and Sultan

Sultan and St. Francis shake hands in the Egyptian desert.

St. Francis of Assisi and the Muslim leader al-Malik al-Kamil meet in Damietta, Egypt in this movie still from The Sultan and the Saint

Instrument of peace

Eight hundred years ago, in 1219 during the 5th Crusade, Francis of Assisi crossed the battlefields to share the Christian faith with Muslim leader, al-Malik al-Kamil, in Damietta, Egypt.

In celebration of this event our Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Committee (JPIC) is inviting the public to join the friars in viewing the film, The Sultan and the Saint, at locations around Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Detroit.

Our Minister General, Br. Michael Perry, OFM, writes, “We today celebrate what no one at that moment could have foreseen: that a Spirit-filled man with nothing of his own crossed the battle lines unarmed to request a meeting with the Sultan, was received with grace by that Sultan, enjoyed an extended period of hospitality with the Muslim leader, and emerged from the visit to reflect anew of the mission of the Friars Minor.”  Earlier this month Br. Michael attended celebrations in Egypt commemorating the 800th anniversary. Read about the event at the Order’s website.
